Earlier than and After: A 1912 Arts & Crafts House Initially Constructed for an English Explorer


In 1912, British explorer, naturalist, and author Aubyn Trevor-Battye tasked architects Inigo Trigs and William Unsworth with constructing his dream house in Hampshire, England. Impressed by the Alhambra, a grand Moorish palace in Granada, Spain, he requested a yellow stucco facade, a purple tile roof, arched home windows, and a deep connection to the encircling panorama. He requested for Tuscan columns and ornate, vaulted ceilings, too.
